OnePlus 8T 120Hz screen
Today I will talk about the 120 Hz screen of the OnePlus 8T. Did OnePlus do a good job with this faster screen compared to other models?
So first some numbers and info about the screen.
The OnePlus 8T has a 6.55-inch screen 1080x2400 AMOLED display. This brings 402 pixels per inch(PPI). The OnePlus 8 has a 90Hz refresh rate while the OnePlus 8T has a 120Hz screen. This means that images will display smoother, especially when it is about moving images. But more later on.
The OnePlus 8T is taller and wider than the OnePlus 8 despite having the same screen size of 6.55 inches. The OnePlus 8T measures 162.8 x 75.5 x 8.4 mm while the OnePlus 8 measures 160.20x72.90x8mm. This means the screen-to-body ratio is 91.9 percent compared to 90.8 percent for the OnePlus 8.
So what do we mean by refresh rate?
The refresh rate measures how quickly the phone’s display updates. In other words, how often and quickly the content on the screen refreshes. Measured in Hertz (Hz), the refresh rate counts the number of times the display refreshes every second it is on. A 60Hz display refreshes 60 times per second, 90Hz is 90 times per second, and 120Hz is 120 times per second. So a 120Hz display refreshes twice as fast as a 60Hz panel, and 4x faster than an old 30Hz TV.
What is the difference between 60Hz, 90Hz & 120Hz?
Higher refresh rate displays make moving content look and feel smoother and snappier. Although most content, such as swiping through your emails and interacting with Facebook’s UI doesn’t really benefit from anything above the standard 60Hz rate. Remember, lots of video content plays back at the industry standard 24 frames per second or 24Hz. Yet apps and content with lots of graphical motion appear smoother with a higher refresh rate display.
Faster displays make the most noticeable difference when it comes to gaming. Higher frame rates and faster display response times can have a noticeable impact because visual latency is lower and gameplay appears smoother. PC gamers regularly swear by 120Hz and even 144Hz displays. Now mobile gamers can benefit too, albeit on a much smaller screen. However, high frame rate gaming requires a beefy, energy-hungry processor too. This ensures that the graphics frame rate keeps up with the high display refresh rate.

What does it mean for your battery life?
Unfortunately, the tradeoff with 90Hz compared to higher refresh rates is that it reduces battery life. Personally, because the OnePlus 8T has a huge battery (4500 mAh) you won’t really feel it. Your battery can keep up easily for more than a day but of course, it drains faster than a 90Hz screen. If you don’t want to drain your battery OnePlus has an option to switch off the 120Hz and lower the refresh rate to 60Hz. (If you really want :))
Conclusion
The 120Hz makes the phone feel overall smooth. When you scroll through the menu looking for apps, you feel the difference. Gaming on a 120Hz is a big plus but also looking at videos, will increase the user experience. For now, if you want to watch videos on YouTube, it is still streaming on 60Hz but they will change this soon and that will be definitely a step forward in technology. After all, I would recommend this phone for gamers but also for non-gamers. It’s a huge step forward in having a better experience handling your phone in daily life. Simple things like scrolling through a menu, watching videos, and as said gaming will give a totally different experience. Also reading will be easier on your eyes which I think is a big plus. Since I use Social Media a lot, I feel continuously the difference when scrolling through timelines. Whenever I revert the option of the 120Hz screen to 60Hz, the phone feels like lagging. SO would I recommend phones with 120Hz screens; yes, I think they are the future and you can already benefit from it today.
Please let me know what you think about a 120Hz screen!
See you next week,
Thijs
